>> 19th November 2011 - 50th Anniversary Concert - Sherborne School

The 50th Anniversary Concert was a phenomenal success, with the return of many old faces and the band performing an exciting array of music. Among the evening's entertainment was the Sherborne Youth Band, Seven Deadly Sins Jazz Band, and of course old friends, the Yetties.

The evening was sensational, and really captured the banding spirit and community feel that has always been evident within the band. Many photographs and videos were taken, and I am currently in the middle of compiling all of these wonderful moments, so beautifully captured on film. Please visit back in the next couple of weeks to take a look for yourself, but for now you can take a sneak peak, with a short video of Cyril White (first conductor of the band) conducting the march "The Bombardier" on Saturday night.

Click on the photo to begin the video.

A big thank you must go to all players, supporters, audience members, staff at Sherborne School, band committee members, Paul Cosh (conductor), and many many more people.

Please visit back at a later date for pictures and videos, but for now, please take a moment to read some of the comments made regarding Saturday's big concert.

"A great success Joe and all the team. Just the right mix of serious and light hearted music and items past and present. All the performances sounded really good from the gallery where we were sitting and heard only positive comments from the rest of the audience too. Well done everyone involved!"

"It was an excellent show, and was back to the "good old days" at the Weavers Club afterwards! Lovely night, really glad we came."

>> 6th February 2011 - Yeovil Entertainment Contest 2011 - 9th Place Result

The band yesterday went along to the Yeovil Entertainment contest for the first time since 1987, when they were under the conducting baton of the late and much missed Ray Hunt.

The band did a superb job of opening the concert, with a very heart rending performance of God Save the Queen, and then went on to entertain the audience with a very exciting and stunning programme of pieces. Some of which included the march Punchinello, Marianne and a fantastic arrangement of The Royal Hunt of the Sun from the suite Evocations.

The band had a wonderful day and really enjoyed returning to the Yeovil stage once again, and hope to be there next year also.

>> October 2008 - Concert for Harry

Sherborne Town Band appeared at Thornford Village Hall on Saturday evening as a tribute to one of their founder members, Harry Bown, who died earlier this year after 40 years playing with the Band.

As well as helping to found the Band in the 1960s, in later years Harry had been a keen member of the Band's Youth section where he helped many young people to learn to play a brass instrument these included Harry’s great niece and nephew, Kirsty Blencowe and Gareth Chaffey, both of whom played on Saturday.

The concert gave the opportunity to reunite several members of both the Youth section and main band as a mark of respect to Harry

At the request of Harry's family a lively, light hearted choice of music was played, starting with the stirring 'Blazeaway' and included 'All that Jazz' from the show Chicago, and arrangements of 'The Great Escape' and 'Ticket to Ride'.

The 80-strong audience was treated to an entertaining night of brass band music under the direction of the Band's musical director Steve Rogers, highlights being the superb solos of John Derrick's Eb Bass in 'Carnival for Bass' and Ian Miles' cornet on 'The Nightingale'.

As a finale the band played the march  “Hearts of Oak” – this was the tune that Harry learned to march to at Whale Island when he was called up to join the Royal Navy.

A retiring collection raised £400 for the Sherborne Town Band.    Margaret Bown and the family would like to thank everyone for attending and especially the Sherborne Town Band for offering to play this tribute to Harry.
